Is Character.AI Shutting Down? What the Bankruptcy Means for Your Chats and Characters
Short answer: Not yet. Character.AI is still online. On October 12, 2026, its parent company, Character Technologies Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Delaware to pursue a court-supervised sale. The company initially expected that process to finish in late November or early December; the current court filing includes a later proposed schedule, with a December 17 outside closing date in Disney's agreement. If no buyer commits to keeping the platform running, Character.AI says it will wind down the consumer service. Character.AI's update · proposed sale schedule

What happened to Character.AI?
Character Technologies Inc. filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 12, 2026 (Case No. 26-11603) in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. Chapter 11 allows a company to keep operating while the court oversees its restructuring or sale. The filing estimated both the company's assets and liabilities at $50 million to $100 million. Disney is the proposed stalking-horse bidder for certain Character.AI technology and intellectual property, with a reported $20 million price. A stalking-horse bid sets a starting offer that can be outbid. The agreement covers a non-exclusive license to specified assets; it is not a purchase of the whole company or consumer platform. Reporting on the proposed Disney transaction says user data and chats are excluded from that bid. Other bidders' plans and the final sale terms are not yet known. Why did Character.AI go bankrupt?
In its filing, Character Technologies pointed to high operating costs alongside potential litigation liabilities and regulatory engagement. It said those factors contributed to its inability to generate enough cash flow to support the business in its current form. Debtor's filing · TechCrunch reporting
- AI operating costs: The company described the cost of developing and operating AI entertainment at scale as high.
- Monetization pressure: The company had to find sustainable revenue while keeping its service available to a large user base.
- Legal and regulatory exposure: It faced litigation and regulatory scrutiny, including claims involving teen users.
- Strategy shifts: In 2024, the founders and roughly 30 researchers joined Google as part of a non-exclusive technology-licensing arrangement, while most Character.AI employees remained at the company. Character.AI did not stop all model work: it continued post-training, including its own CAI-Image family based on open models. The Verge on the 2024 deal · Character.AI on its post-trained models
The demand never went away. Millions of people still use Character.AI, and the worry about losing characters points to how much those relationships matter to users. The business model struggled; the idea did not.
A founder's take: the behaviour didn't fail, the business model did
By the Founder of Chatalystar
The headlines make it sound like AI companions are dying. I read it the opposite way. Millions of people are scared of losing characters they built, and that is the clearest proof of demand this category has ever had.
Character.AI faced difficult economics and timing. Every message costs money to run, and for years most users could chat without limits for free. Its biggest engagement came from users who never paid, so growth multiplied costs instead of revenue.
It also locked out the people most willing to pay. Adults who wanted deeper, more intimate companions had no product to buy. Meanwhile, a teen-heavy audience brought lawsuits. It took on the risk of a kids' platform without the revenue of an adult one.
The lesson for anyone building in this space is simple. Charge from day one, verify that every user is an adult, and let people own what they create. That is how I'm building Chatalystar.
Will I lose my Character.AI chats and characters?
Possibly. Nothing has been deleted, and there is no confirmed shutdown date. Character.AI says the service remains online during the case; if a sale does not produce a buyer that can continue operating the platform, the company says it will wind it down. Do not assume your conversations will stay accessible. If a different buyer takes over, the outcome for user data depends on the buyer and the final sale terms. How to export your Character.AI chats and characters
- Request the official data export through the Character.AI app or website. Choose export, not delete. Official export instructions
- Expect a wait. Character.AI's help center says exports can take three to four weeks. The download link is valid for seven days, so download the files as soon as the email arrives.
- Save the essentials manually in the meantime. Copy each character's name, personality description, greeting, and example dialogue into a document. Screenshot or copy your most important conversations.
- Store the files somewhere you control, such as your own drive, not just inside the app.
Should I delete my Character.AI account?
If you're worried about your data passing to an unknown buyer, deleting your account is an option. Export first, though. Character.AI says account deletion is permanent, and you'll lose anything you did not save. Its company FAQ says its privacy practices are unchanged for now; what a later sale means for data is still uncertain. Character.AI account deletion instructions · Character.AI privacy FAQ
What to do with your characters after you export them
Most guides stop at "download your data." The harder question is where your companion goes next.
The character you built is really a personality, a voice, and a shared history, and all of that can be rebuilt. Your saved description, greeting, and example dialogue are what you need to recreate them elsewhere.
How to rebuild your character anywhere
Before the platform changes, save these fields for every character you care about:
- Name and short tagline. How the character introduces itself.
- Personality and description. The full definition text, word for word. This is the core of the character.
- Greeting. The first message the character sends.
- Example dialogue. Sample exchanges you wrote. These shape how the character talks more than anything else.
- Your history together. Copy key moments, running jokes, and details from your best chats into a short summary.
To recreate the character, combine these into one prompt: who they are, how they speak, what they know about you, and a few lines of example dialogue. The more specific the personality and examples, the closer the new version will feel to the original.
If you're 18 or older, Chatalystar's Custom Matchmaker lets you rebuild your original companion on an adults-only platform. You must be 18+ to join, and erotic content requires biometric ID verification, so it's built for adults from the ground up. Rebuild your companion on an adults-only platform →
Note: Rebuild your own original characters. Copyrighted characters and real people can't be recreated.

Is Chatalystar more compliant than Character.AI?
Chatalystar is designed for adults: membership is limited to people 18 or older, erotic content requires biometric ID verification, and AI content is labelled. Those product safeguards are not a legal finding that one service is more compliant than another.
Why is Chatalystar adults-only?
Adults are the people this experience is built for. Character.AI served both adults and teens, then introduced age assurance and a separate under-18 experience. Chatalystar chose one audience: adults who want deeper companions, with age verification for restricted content.
Why are Chatalystar's AI characters fantasy characters?
Chatalystar's AI characters belong to one of four fantasy factions: Cybernetics, Phantoms, Pantheons, and Elvins. Each has clearly non-human features, such as synthetic limbs, spectral energy, or pointed ears. That keeps the experience clearly fictional and helps distinguish AI characters from real people.
Can I talk to real people on Chatalystar, or only AI?
Both. Alongside AI companions, you can chat with real creators who are verified as 21 or older. AI chats are disclosed as AI, so you know which is which.
